The Museum of Architecture and Design, located in Helsinki’s South Harbour, celebrates Finland’s legacy in innovation, technology, and environmental sustainability. The design draws inspiration from the nation’s tradition of public spaces as hubs for societal exchange, creating an immersive environment for visitors. A large ramp spans across the museum’s roof, transforming it into an expansive public plaza that connects visitors to both the cityscape and nature. Beneath the roof, a pair of weather-controlled tunnels provide year-round access to public galleries.
Constructed from durable concrete, the museum is designed to withstand the test of time, minimizing the need for future renovations and reducing its environmental impact. The material’s thermal mass regulates interior temperatures, reducing the energy needed for heating and cooling. The innovative use of the rooftop as a public space not only redefines the museum experience but also strengthens the connection between architecture and urban life, making the building a dynamic cultural hub and an integral part of Helsinki’s public realm.
